Beauty Bloggers are Bizarre

We bloggers are weird. It's a known fact. Hell, we're probably weirder than those guys who play World of Warcraft and go larping dressed as cornflake coated dwarves or paraplegic molluscs. I don't mean it in a bad way - we're a good kind of weird, a unique weird, a weird that makes us do crazy but awesome things...

 1. We buy stuff just to blog. Do you really think I need another pink lipstick? No, like hell I do. I'll still buy it, naturally...And probably swatch, review, use it twice then shove it in my drawer full of another 40 lipsticks I also don't use.

2. Blog vs. People. Blog wins. Come on, now. I bet we've all done the, 'Oh, sorry, I can't come out tonight I have to do some uni work/ look after the baby/ go to the gym.' when really all we're doing is slobbing out in front of Blogger or Wordpress, tweeting about blushers and eating Doritos.

3. Time management? What is that? "Yeah! Super! I'm on a roll today, I can get this posted in 10 minutes." 40 minutes later, we'll still be sat there, staring at a blank screen, but we're optimistic...Maybe if we stare long enough words will just appear? Right? RIIIGHT?!

4. We don't need sleep. We're like vampires...except we don't sleep in the day either. We take photos in the day, go and hunt down the latest new product, come home and tweet about it. At night, we write...and tweet some more...and watch trashy TV and tweet about that, too.

5. We obsess over light. Some bloggers run towards light, arms full of products, faster than a moth to a flame. Why? Because day light can not be wasted! MUST TAKE PHOTOS. NOW.
6. Twitter is an advice forum. Our followers are our most trusted advisers. Whatever you want to know, whatever you want to buy, ask away and somebody has *something* to say.

7. We know things we shouldn't know. We know aaaall your secrets! MUAHAHA. If you're a beauty company, anyway. We'll usually know about the launch/ development of your latest products before your stockists or sales advisors do...

8. We inconvenience ourselves 24/ 7. For fun. Straightening our hair and 1am so it's nice for blog pics the next day, getting up at 6am so we can take pictures or write before work/ college/ uni, taking hour long 'detours' so that we can go to Selfridges and have a swatch fest, arranging family holidays around product launches...

9. We get excited over silly things. Creme Brulé vaseline?! Really now?!

10. We are fickle. Beauty bloggers tend to rave about certain products one week and slate them the next. I know you're all sat there shaking your heads - 'Not me!' um... Urban Decay 'Naked' palette. I rest my case.

11. We think how we write. You're sat there, putting on your make-up, like any normal day - except for one thing. The commentary in your head - 'I really like how this blush applies, smooth, creamy, blendable. It might look quite intimidating in the pot, but it's easy to tone it down...'

12. It might stain, but I'm swatching it anyway. Ever seen a girl walking around with faded blobs of colour running up her arm? She's probably a beauty blogger. We don't care if it's going to stain or we have to go and visit our Gran in 20 minutes - those lipsticks are being swatched. So there.

13. Everyone/ everything is a target. Girl with cool hair on the bus *photo* Pub lunch *photo* Lady with scary nails on the train *photo* New stand in Superdrug *photo*

14. One hand painted? One eye made up? Wonky make-up is a regular occurrence across the beauty blogosphere, so it seems! Why line both eyes or paint both hands when you're only taking pictures of one? Pssht. Both sides, you crazy?!

15. We are hoarders. Make-up, leaflets about make-up collections, empty boxes...Oh, the empty boxes. I have an entire draw of empty boxes. WHY?! It's not like they're a souvenir! I have the actual item, why must I keep the box?! Don't worry, boxes, I still love you...

16. Nothing is useable until photographed. Only can you use a product once you have photographed the packaging it arrived in, the actual product packaging and the untouched, shiny, new, clean product itself. Until then, we hide it away in its virgin stage until we find time to get the camera out!

17. We have a folder of photos of...ourselves. We take pictures for FOTDs, swatches etc, we'll take 200 just to find ONE decent shot. Edit it, save it neatly away and hope nobody comes across the folder titled 'Blog Pics'...To anyone but a beauty blogger, having 500 images of yourself would be mental!

18. We're weird and proud. Admit it - you've just been nodding and chuckling to yourself the whole way through this post!

Why are we beauty bloggers so bizarre? Why do we do such things? Because we love beauty, we love blogging and ordinary is boring - that's why! Many thanks to my Twitter crew for helping me out by sharing their weird habits!

Do you do any of these? Can you think of any more? I'll add them in if you do!

  3. This is the funniest thing I've read in ages -OMG ALL of it is true..
I love the fact that whenever I go to a make up counter to ask about a product the MUA doesn't even know it's coming out or what it is but I have the date and the name ..LOL. Nuts.
I keep the boxes too and I truly don't really know why!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yep, I do all that, except I'm not on Twitter (yet) so that's not applicable to me ;). My bad habit is to inform sales staff here in Brussels of upcoming product launches because they are literally clueless. Smug... moi???

    ReplyDelete
  5. OMG. I thought I was the only one who kept the boxes! Everything you said is true. Great Post :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. This post is brilliant! Laughted the whole way through :) 'GUILTY' !

    ReplyDelete
  7. Fab post, and so spot on! I have far too many empty boxes! And the swatch marks on my arm often make an appearance! I don't do the 1am hairstraightening, I have dreads which makes doing my hair a LOT easier!

    ReplyDelete
  8. seeing my sin on here! hillarious! :) xx

    ReplyDelete
  9. Great post! :)
I have been saving my empty boxes for years now and I didn't even have a blog back then.. Not sure why..

    ReplyDelete
  10. OMG, someone please bless this post, every single word is so true :D

    ReplyDelete
  11. I share so many of these traits, it's like you've been stalking me! I have quite the collection of empty boxes that are taking up precious space where actual product could be! It's the beauty companies fault for making beautiful packaging, they've made us this way!

    ReplyDelete
  12. So many of these are SO true. Except the naked palette, I quite openly hated that from the start ;) fabulous post xx

    ReplyDelete
  13. Haha so true so very true and so funny too

    ReplyDelete
  14. This is hilarious, we're like a new breed of people. I definitely do all these things and am totally unaware of it. When my arms are covered in swatches or I have different blush/shadow/lippy on each side of my face people stare at me and I've no idea why! xx

    ReplyDelete
  17. My favorite one was the commentary in the head! :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. OMG This is SOOOO true: 11. We think how we write. I do that EVERYTIME I swatch an item, like I'm talking to a camera inside my brain. I thought I was going crazy, but now I know this is pretty normal.

    ReplyDelete
  19. hehe this made me giggle! So true... It's a lot healthier than my old WoW addiction... i think? :p

    xox

    ReplyDelete
  20. fab post... loved it!!!
my other half doesn't understand my weird habits due to blogging but i'm glad my fellow bloggers do!! xx

    ReplyDelete
  21. hahaah. so many things that you wrote are so true xD !!

    ReplyDelete
  22. OMG best blog post ever!!It is SOOO true no matter where you are in the world all beauty bloggers are replicas of each other...scary stuff lol

    ReplyDelete
  23. haha this is brilliant, especially 11 & 12, I'm always reviewing stuff in my head to empty rooms! xxx

    ReplyDelete
  24. *Hangs head in shame, knowing you know me, but not in real life. Also, because I use asterisks for thoughts that are now words*

My problem is worse than I realized. Should I thank you or be upset with you? ;P

    ReplyDelete
  25. This made me giggle everything is so true! I had those bloody Collection 2000 liquid eyeliner pen swatches up my arm for days! (excellent product though... great staying power!)

& the only applying make up to one half of yourself! I do that all the time with blushers!

    xx

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm finding that the longer I blog, the more this all comes true! I can remember instances of ALL of these, except the planning family events! LOL (I HAVE been late to them though!)

    ReplyDelete
  27. haha i absolutely love this post, made me laugh a lot! xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't blog that much anymore so I didn't relate to everything but I have at one point. The running toward light thing is so funny & true.. I hate how it gets dark so early now though!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Aha, such a fantastic post and so true. I particularly loved the running commentary point, I get that quite often, but about random things I'm doing. Such a funny read!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I need my sleep. I treasure my sleep. I also live in a coastal rain forest, so I have to plan photographing any holographic polishes only during certain months...because - sun? In November?!?? You must live in a state that doesn't touch the Canadian border, then... :)

I also don't own a cellphone, so don't have a camera with me all the time.

But the rest of the list...yeah, that's me all the way!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. this was so spot on and ace, i love it! haha. i relate to so many of these.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I can relate to pretty much all of these, made me laugh. We are a bunch of weirdos!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ahahahahahah I recognized myself in so many of these! I had to tweet this!

    ReplyDelete
  34. OMG, I've not even been doing it very long and I do ALL of those things! Great post!

    ReplyDelete
  35. AH, I love these! So true!!!! GREAT post!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wow! this is so true! I totally agree with #1. I love this post.

    ReplyDelete
  37. HAHA!!!! I love this!!! It so true, and only us beauty bloggers would understand and agree. Great post!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh, and don't forget that no one takes their own picture as much as we do. And purposely take them with our eyes closed! :D

    ReplyDelete
  39. #11 & 16 is so me! I bought 2 new eyeshadows that I was dying to use , but I made myself wait a week so id have time to photograph it lol!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Haha great post! Although I don't really do most of those. For example, I take maybe 3 photos, then get bored and call it a day. Hence why all my photos are crappy. Or I get a new product and start using it straight away, even though I know I should take photos of it before I put a dent in it. I'm so lazy, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  41. True! Although I have mad affection for the Naked Palette.

    ReplyDelete
  42. i think having 500 pics of you even though you're not a beauty blogger is more mental. yes, that's me.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lol it's like you read my mind! I'm guilty of all of these things but I'm glad I'm not the only one! Loved this post!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sooo good! I haven't been a beauty blogger for that long and already these are many of my habits!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Love this! Blog vs People is the toughest one - a lot of the time when I'm stuck in a dull social situation my brain is just saying to me "I wish I were reading blogs instead..."! x

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lol, all of these are things I do! Especially the one eye thing, I'm terrible for that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lily this is the BEST post I've seen in ages. :D

    Can I add one?

    18. We've all been laughing and nodding throughout the entire list.

It's just unreal, we're like a different breed!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love this post, I was sat here just saying 'yep' in response to pretty much every point! :-) Spot on!

    xx

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is such a golden post. I didn't realise HOW weird I was until I read this list and shook my head in agreement with every single one.

    ReplyDelete
  50. My other half & my son are always laughing as me, hovering by the window to get the best light or pouting for ages to get just the right picture! Loved this xx

    ReplyDelete
  51. Haha, this is an awesome post!

I can't stop myself from commentating when i'm doing my makeup - it's as if i'm filming a video for youtube - i'll be doing my eyemakeup and muttering things like 'just pack that colour all over the lid' or 'and now blend it out'. Crazy, in a good way.

The other thing I do is get into passionate conversations about makeup with my friends who are not interested in makeup - they listen sometimes, and sometimes get interested but most of the time vague out - which I don't care about.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh yes! We are weird. I agree on almost everything written above. I do most of that stuff too, except no. 6 (Twitter - I don't get as much replies as I'd want to) and no. 15 (hoarding - I like to get rid of the stuff I don't use, boxes and packaging).

P.S: This post is super great. =)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Haha, this is so true! I'm obsessing over light especially at the moment because when I leave for work it is dark and when I return it is dark! So annoying for photos! I'm resorting to my flash at the moment otherwise I will only get weekends to do photography :(

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hahaha, this made me smile. So true.

    ReplyDelete
  55. This is so awesome, and true! I may print this and hang it above my makeup area ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Haha.. This.is.awesome! RIGHT ON! *rushes off to find Creme Brule Vaseline!* hehe

    ReplyDelete
  57. Loved reading through this, so true! :D

    ReplyDelete
  58. Uh, my life! What a unique and fun little post! :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Absolutely spot on - every word!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. This is a fabulous post and I like to think of it like 'The Rules'. I'm glad there is evidence that I can show the hubby that I'm not the only one who doesn't use stuff until it's photographed!

    ReplyDelete
  61. OMG almost EVERYTHING you said there was so right especially about the day light and nothing being usable until you take a photo of it!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I laughed out loud and nodded my head a lot while reading this post. Though I am not really a beauty blogger I do blog I still relate well to this post. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Great post! It's so true :D

    ReplyDelete
  64. Brilliant post! These are so true! I have a drawer full of boxes too. They don't get thrown away until I'm done photographing/reviewing! xx

    ReplyDelete
  65. This is all so true! At least we know we're not alone in our weird habits!:D

    ReplyDelete
  66. this is my favourite post today! absolutely fantastic. I laughed and nodded like you said. Oh and the boxed, I have a draw dedicated to them and I still don't know why!? I feel sooo much better now x

    ReplyDelete
  67. Today I nearly had a panic attack because I had to use a foundation I hadn't photographed yet.

    xxx

    ReplyDelete
  68. This is absolutely true. I am sure my boyfriend thinks I am crazy and does not understand swatching new products but I think it is fun and that is what counts :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. This is just... Spot on!
Fellow Vampires, eeerrrrr... Beauty Bloggers Unite!

    And another for the list:

Lunch money or eye shadow? Lipstick?
    THE MAKEUP ALWAYS WINS!
I mean really... Who needs money for rent. All we need is a camera, good lighting, and a computer! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  70. I love this post! I could relate to everything that was said. I am so obsessed when it comes to light. If there's enough light I immediately reach for my camera!
How about searching for the best deals on makeup?

    xo

  71. This is a fantastic post. You had me laughing at every point. No.14 - yep! And do you know how often you can see me skulking around Boots on my lunchbreak?? They give me funny looks (like, here comes that weirdo again). I swear, no-one other than my blogger family would understand!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hilarious & sooooooo true! I have a cake blog but I'm exactly the same. Excellent post :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. GREAT POST! I could totally relate to the vast majority of these!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Sing it sister! I came across a giant stash of Urban Decay Face Case boxes behind a row of books in the bookcase that I must have hidden there years ago so my husband wouldn't see them and ask why I was keeping empty boxes!

Worse than walking around with one hand polished - I often walk around with both hands polished different colours. It is astounding how little people must pay attention to me though - rarely does anyone notice (or they are too polite to comment)!

Great post, glad to know I'm not alone in my weirdness!

    Best, Lisamarie

    ReplyDelete
  75. Now I know for SURE nothing is wrong with me...the one eye makeup omg, soooo true lol

    ReplyDelete
  76. Haha, that's great, I think you covered it all

    ReplyDelete
  77. yesss! it's true, just like you and everyone else said! I've got a new line though: you curse that the day is only containing 24 hours when you should need so many more to use the time to reply comments, take photos, upload the, cut them, and post them.
    Correct?

    ReplyDelete
  78. All of this is SO true, great observation!

I would like to add point 19: beauty bloggers develop unnaturally big love for cats. The feline creatures sprawl all around beauty blogs!

P.S. I've made this a tag for Estonian beauty bloggers, with correct referrals to your blog of course. Hope it's OK with you.

    Best wishes,
    Tolmu Rull

    ReplyDelete
  79. Wow! This is so, so accurate! ROFL!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I love this post! :) These things are absolutly true. :D
