REVIEW - Moroccan Oil Treatment, Worth the Price?

Moroccan Oil was the starting point in conditioning hair oils - the trend setter, the one to look up to, the one to covet and cheekily pop on to birthday wishlists with 'full size, pleeeease' written in brackets beside it. It's the original, and like rock songs covered by pop stars - the original is usually the best. But how true is this when it comes to hair oil? We've all probably tried at least five cheaper versions of Moroccan Oil by now, right? So, is it truly worth the hype?
First things first, doesn't the bottle remind you of that copy cat oil by Aldi?! I must say, Aldi, you've done a good job duping the packaging *pats Aldi's back* Anyway. The bottle is a translucent brown, with trademark aqua blue label and sticker seal on the lid. All well and good until...

That ridiculously massive opening to pour the oil out of! Are you serious, Moroccan Oil? Do you not know how easy you are to over pour? A little stopper with a tiny hole surely doesn't cost that much to add to your design! I *think* the full sizes come with a pump, which would be handy. With the mini sizes...well, just be careful not to splash it down yourself.

Ingredients wise,  Moroccan Oil is nothing special. So much so that it shares its top four ingredients with Aldi's version. The only real difference is that is contains slightly less perfume (though it does also contain butylphenyl methylpropional and alpha-isomethyl ionone, ingredients purely used for their scents) and also contains linseed oil. So, it's active ingredients are the exact same as those you'd find in hair oils you could pick up for a fiver or less. Aldi's version actually contains more ingredients beneficial to your hair's health!

I apply Moroccan Oil to towel dried hair after giving it a good wash and condition. I section my hair, then work the oil in from the tips up towards the root. Finally, I'll comb it all through very gently and let it dry naturally. Now, I only ever apply this oil at night. Why? Because it smells awful. It genuinely smells like urine masked by a floral air freshener. However, the smell fades quickly enough that I'm not running to wash it back out after a few minutes.
If we overlook the average ingredients list, over pricing and nasty scent, we find a product that genuinely delivers. My hair is healthy, smooth, soft and shiny - excellent! Is it down to the argan oil? 'fraid not. As with most hair oils, the smoothing and softening effect is 90% down the the silicones used - now, DON'T RUN A MILE AT THE MENTION OF SILICONES. They aren't all the devil's work, dear reader. Cyclomethicone and dimethicone when used together do not build up heavily in the hair. Cyclomethicone actually evaporates. However, dimethicone is NOT water soluble. You will need to use a clarifying shampoo to completely remove it.

Taken all of that in? I guess there was a fair bit of education and myth busting in that lot! Bottom line? Don't get suckered in to pricey hair oils - look at the ingredients and do some research before parting with your hard earned cash! However, if you're still craving Moroccan Oil - go for it, it does give results, after all!

  3. I actually received this mini bottle for review - no way I would have splurged for it myself. You're right, the opening is humongous and I hate it, but I really think you got a bad bottle - mine smells absolutely amazing. It does deliver amazing results, but not enough for me to splurge for a full sized bottle, many dupes out there! (Avon Moroccan oil hair treatment for e.g.) On the other hand, I find that the tiny bottle really does last for ages!

  5. I use a pricey argan oil too but the Pro naturals brand one. It does do magic on my hair though, so personally I think it's worth the price.

  8. Great post! I chuckled at your "If we overlook the average ingredients list, over pricing and nasty scent" line. I agree with you about doing research, we all really should do a bit of research now and then, it doesn't hurt and it will probably saves us money in the long run.
