To relax, or not to relax...

That is the question.

I don't mean outside with an ice cold pint of Kopparberg - that's gonna happen either way - I mean my unruly, frizz bomb hair.

[[ Keep in mind - I have a mohawk. This is less than 1/3 of the hair I have! ]]

For as long as I can remember I've envied those with lovely, smooth hair. My friends would complain about the tiniest, most pathetic amount of frizz or call the almost undetectable wave in their hair an 'annoying curl' and I'd feel like punching them. They could wear their hair down, style it how they liked and spend 2 minutes ironing out any kinks. I'd scrape mine back into a bun and pretend it didn't exist.

I hate how frizzy it is (no high street/ salon anti-frizz serums/ shampoos have ever worked), I hate how it is CONSTANTLY dry - no matter what and I hate how I can't style it because my hair is too strong to hold anything more than a pomp, bun or pony tail.

Relaxing it may well be the answer to my problems - then again, it might just make them even worse. I've read all of the pros and cons lists and I know the science behind it (I'm actually a qualified hair stylist!) but I'm still half and half. It's a 50/ 50 outcome.

[[ Extensions, which as you can see don't match the texture of my frizztastic hair ]]

THAT is how I want my hair :( Lovely and long and straight and smooth. You know the annoying thing? My sister has beautifully long, straight, smooth hair. Genes, eh? Aren't they a bitch.

  1. I say go for it, you only live once you might as well give it a try. What's the worst that could happen? If it's annoying you anyway I think it's got to be worth a shot.

  4. go for it.
i have curly hair and i know the kind of hell it can be (even for the choices of haircuts...)
i ve learned to deal with it but if you can't, don't make your life a hell and just do it :)

  5. Haha, I like how the general notion is 'Go for it!' :D

I'm just worried about the state it could leave it in, it's already quite bad after the bleaching, straightening and general abuse.

I think I'll baby it for a while and then do it - I'm sure I could rock the fully shaven head if it all went wrong hahaha.

    Thanks guys!

  6. Haha I always thought your hair looked pretty bombass in your videos, lol. It definitely depends on whether you feel like your hair needs little break or not. True though, genes are a bitch sometimes. On the bright side I seriously feel like with your face you could pull of really any hairstyle...

The reason your hair is frizzy because you shampoo it all the time and you probably don't deep condition or use treatment.
I mean, if you don't know what you're doing with your hair and you don't have a relaxing well, permanently straightening it is not going to make it better. Your hair will be dry, crunchy and super frizzy. Not to mention damaged. I hope these links work for you. Try the techniques before you relax.
Here are some links to solving your problem:
    pre-shampoo
    deep conditioners
    shampoos and how they work

  9. LeAnne, I shampoo 1 - 2 times a week, followed by a rich coconut conditioner designed for dry/ damaged hair. I also use heat protective spray and a little leave in conditioner. It's been dry for as long as I can remember, way before I started straightening it.

I may well try products for those with afro hair, seeing as they usually focus on locking in moisture. Your links are very helpful, and I'll be following!

    Thanks for your help!

  10. I would relax it if it really bothers you. I have smooth straight hair...but everyone else in my family has wavy/curly hair. I must be the mailman's baby. Ha!

  11. OMG I know how you feel about the genes thing. My sisters both have perfect hair. The one has straightish hair and not the curly craziness I have and the others hair is nice curly! And then they both have perfect eyelashes to boot, completely curled and all that and me? I get the straight, short ones ><
