Darling Girl Cosmetics 'Oh the Horror!' Swatches

I love seeing what indie companies have been cooking up when it comes to Halloween, being a complete horror whore (sounds much worse than I intended it to...) myself. Last year I couldn't resist ordering from Darling Girl Cosmetics Halloween collection, 'Oh the Horror!' seeing as it took inspiration from old school horrors - my favourite kind!

Lets see what I bought...

Brocade - This wasn't part of the collection, it came as a free sample, but it's so pretty  had to share it in this post! Gleaming golden rose which is more intensely metallic when foiled. Applied dry with a light hand, it would make quite a nice blush.

Heads Will Roll - Glowing medium grey-purple with violet iridescence. Brighter and more pigmented than my swatch (darn flash) and reminds me of MAC 'Violet' pigment. 

The Count - Vivid blurple with sparkles, lies somewhere between royal blue and a true purple. This would look ace paired with a brilliantly metallic gold or silver.

Attack of the 50ft Woman - Bright yellow with red iridescence , which makes it look quite orange toned. A pretty unique shade which looks awesome foiled.

Frankenstein - Soft grey-green toned brown with coppery shift and sparkles. This is utterly stunning both dry and foiled and would make a fab 'one colour wash'.

The Boogeyman - Soft golden toned taupe with slight coppery shift and sparkles. Such a pretty neutral which would look great with flicked out eyeliner.

Here's Johnny! - Red toned purple rammed full of sparkle! I'd say this was mostly glitz, and definitely one to be applied over glitter glue. It's simply stunning and would look incredible as part of a dark smokey eye. The darker swatch is 'Here's Johnny!' applied over black eyeliner.

King Kong - Black base with lots of turquoise sparkle and glitz. This seems more green-grey toned that blue to me, not a shade I'd usually choose, but the sparkle makes it a bit more 'me'.

The Monster Within - Very similar to 'King Kong', but much bluer and sparklier. The strong teal shift really compliments the deep purple hue this takes at certain angles - my favourite of the bunch!
Each shade is well pigmented and buttery smooth, although I would say that 'Here's Johnny' works more as a glitter than an eyeshadow. Also keep in mind that 'Brocade' and 'The Count' are definitely eyeshadows you have to pat rather than swipe on - else you end up with a smear of the base colour with no sparkle and an uneven finish.
I used the 'international baggies' option as this saves a TONNE on shipping, and decanted the eyeshadows into 3g jars purchased from an eBay seller. This is pretty easy to do and well worth it for saving on shipping - jars are cheap after all!

A Few Everyday Looks

This last week I've been trying to get some more use out of my loose eyeshadows. I have so many, but can't help falling back on the convenience of a decent palette lately! So, here are a few of my most recent looks.

As you might be able to tell, I was having a bit of a Darling Girl Cosmetics week! They're still my favourite indie company by miles - I just love the complexities of the colours and the amazing formula. I wish I could have captured 'Coco Loco' better, it's a lovely soft brown with blue and pink shimmer which makes it rather interesting for a neutral.

FOTD - Undress Me Too

Over the Summer, I got so used to the only time I wore make-up being at work behind a dark, hectic bar, that slowly my work make-up became my day to day face. I think the only thing I do differently is skipping on highlighting my cheekbones! Somehow, I've become pretty fast at it these days and even wear it for staring at computers for hours at uni.

I managed to snap a few pictures on Sunday before going bowling (I won! First time I've ever been and not come last haha) since I quite liked this one! I usually use any of the shimmery shades from 'Undress Me Too' on the lid, the Fashionista browns in the crease and the black from 'Undress Me Too' to darken things down a bit.

FOTD - Fools Gold

Gold for £5? SEEMS LEGIT. Well, it can be in terms of make-up...For this look I used my current favourite palette, MUA 'Undress Me Too' (£4) as well as MUA waterproof liquid eyeliner (£1) - so that's a fiver's worth of gold!

Now, I'm not sure why I haven't done a proper review of MUA's waterproof liquid eyeliner yet because IT'S AWESOME. I was using it during Winter and it simply laughed in the face of snow and rain. The rest if my make-up was a victim to the weather most days - but the £1 eyeliner? That stuff's staying.

I started with 'Naked', applying it to my browbone. Then I swept 'Devotion' over 2/3 of the lid, along with 'Dreamy' on the outer lid and crease. 'Corrupt' was used to darken the crease and line the lower lashes. I then slicked on some eyeliner and mascara and that's it - easy! As always, Too Faced 'Shadow Insurance' was my primer of choice.

FACE - The Body Shop 'Tea Tree Pore Minimising Primer', Collection 'Lasting Perfection' concealer, Bourjois 'Healthy Mix' foundation, Rimmel 'Stay Matte' powder, No.7 highlighting powder, NYC bronzer, Illamasqua 'Lover' blush.
LIPS - 17 'Bare it All' lipstick.
Then off I trotted to Manchester and met the boyfriend for food at Kosmonaut, somewhere we'll probably visit again. Veggies, you even have more than two options there! And no sodding beetroot! WHAT A GOD DAMN MIRACLE.

Recent Eye Make-up Looks

Recently, the only times I've really been wearing make-up is to go to work - laziness and heat mean I'm more than happy to bob about bare faced! I have, however, managed to snap a few quick pictures of what I've been wearing before running off to the train station...

I USED - TFSI, Darling Girl 'Elvin Magic', Darling Girl 'Joust', Natural Collection 'Shell', FashionistA brow palette medium brown shade, Sleek dark purple, MUA eyeliner, mascara.

The easiest kind of look if you still want a bit of impact - shimmery neutrals and a brighter shade along the lower lashes. 'Joust' is such an amazing shade - greyish brown which seems to transform to plum-pink, green and complex shades of taupe, just stunning!

I USED - TFSI, Chinovi 'Princess', Darling Girl 'Joust', Darling Girl 'Strut', Sleek matte black, MUA eyeliner, mascara.

Here's 'Joust' again! See how this time it looks to have blue-green shimmer instead of plum-pink? The lid shade didn't photograph too well - but 'Princess' is actually more a bubblegum pink with golden shimmer.

I USED - TFSI, MAC 'Pink Bronze', Fyrinnae 'Picture it, Sicily', Sleek matte black, Heavenly Naturals 'Hummingbird', MUA black eyeliner, Sleek matte peach, mascara.
This is what I wore for the 'FABB Bloggers Manchester' event on Saturday and I loved the duochrome-iness of it. 'Pink Bronze' is one of my all time favourite shades - is it bronze, pink, or orange? It's a mish mash of all three and truly striking.

REVIEW - MUA 'Undress Me Too' Palette

Perhaps a little late to this particular party - but isn't that fashionable? Intriguing how something is fashionable when usually seen as rude whenever who is waiting is fuelled with alcohol...Maybe I'll send people some whiskey when I have an appointment next time? How confused would my dentist be? Anyway.

I'm sure you know the drill with this one by now - the MUA 'Undress Me Too' palette is the highstreet's answer to Urban Decay's Naked 2 palette (RRP £36). From duping the colours to cheekily taking inspiration from the Urban Decay palette's name, MUA have it down with their £4 palette - that's a £32 saving! Lets check out the shades, shall we?

The first half is the cooler half, with taupes and creams alongside two warm golds. You may have noticed the shade 'Naked' missing - that's because it's so close to my skintone it barely shows up! Either way, it's a warm, pale yellow toned cream which is perfect for highlighting.

The right half to the palette is mostly warmer shades. 'Fiery' is a stunning copper, 'Wink' a gorgeous pink toned brown and 'Corrupt' is an incredibly deep, matte black.

Packaging is the same as the usual MUA palettes, but white rather than black. I know this will end up filthy, but I quite like the freshness of the white anyway! I'll admire it while it's all shiny and new! It's a bit flimsy, so I definitely wouldn't have this bumping about loose in the bottom of my bag.

Overall, a fantastic palette with about an even mix of cool and warm tones. Each shadow is well pigmented and buttery smooth to blend. The golden shades are fabulously rich and attention grabbing. I've been wearing them to work since it requires next to no thought to put together a nice combination with all of the shade in the palette and nothing else. I can even use 'Lavish' as an eyebrow filler - winning!

Yet ANOTHER Darling Girl Cosmetics Haul Plus Swatches

We all know there's nothing more I like to indulge in than a little Darling Girl, right? Well, it's true! And here's the last lot of epic eyeshadows which made their way into my swatch stained hands...

Now, I've actually had these since the start of October yet somehow never got around to taking pictures. As you can see, I was going through a little bit of a red phase back then...

DARK EMBER - A gloriously rich, decadent, deep shade of metallic red which buffs down to an orangey copper (you can see it peaking through just about). I bought this after seeing Pixiwoo wearing MAC 'Cranberry' and falling a little in love - 'Dark Ember' is a fair 'Cranberry' dupe, perhaps a touch less pink and way richer.

INFERNO ROOM - A luxurious, coppery, orange toned red which an unapologetic amount of gold sparkle. A sticky base is definitely in need for this beaut'.

RUBY SOHO - Destination uuuuuuunknown, ruby, ruby, ruby, ruby soho! Um. What I mean by that is - 'Ruby Soho' is a highly pink toned red with a crazy amount of violet sparkle, very unique.

SCARAB - Warm toned brown with a strong golden green duochrome. It reminds me an awful lot of MAC 'Old Gold', but obviously with a brown base as opposed to gold. If you're after something more exciting than taupe to wear at the office, or a more fun eyeliner shade than black, 'Scarab' might just be what you're after.

LONDON CALLING - A bit of a strange one, red copper on a base of dark blue. The copper and blue merge to give an overall impression of purple, but the colour shift is evident in different lights. Indie lovers will be quick to liken this to Fyrinnae 'Mephisto' - however, it's not as bold as 'Mephisto' and it's far easier to blend without making it patchy.

MILES FROM NOWHERE - A light silvery gold with baby pink sparkle, this would make a beautiful 'one colour wash'.

MISS ARGENTINA - I absolutely HAD TO have this as soon as I saw it - one of my favourite colour combos (pink and turquoise), inspired by my favourite character in one of my favourite films?! HELL YES. I even wore this when I dressed up as Miss Argentina herself :)

RECENTLY DECEASED - An unexpected favourite in this particular bunch, dirty brown toned plum with gold sparkle. This would make a killer smokey eye, a fantastic eyeliner shade and it's fab for darkening the crease.

ROOTS RADICAL - I wore this last November when I saw Rancid for the second time (supported by NOFX - those guys give an awesome show!) A happy, spring green with golden shimmer.

UNICORN - Magical by name, magical by nature, 'Unicorn' seems to shift from blue-white, to silver-white, to pink-white, to purple-white every time you look at it! If you like using a spangly, light shade around the inner eye, you'll love this. Unfortunately I couldn't capture it very well in the swatch pics :(

 

 MERMAID - Cosmetic grade glitter in a mix of aqua, emerald and silver. These glitters are super fine and look amazing patted over eyeshadows. I use Darling Girl glitter glue to hold glitter firmly in place.

Overall - more amazing colour from an amazing company who never fail to impress. If you're thinking about venturing into the world of indie cosmetics or you're bored of drugstore brands, I'd highly recommend Darling Girl as your first port of call :)
