FOTD - Faeries vs. Monsters

Today was one of those days when you wake up with plans, get up, feel inspired and then...boom. Something crops up which stops you fulfilling your plans. In my case, this was my grandparents visiting for an entire six hours. SIX HOURS. So instead of researching and producing designs for college work, I've drank lots of tea, done a few sudokus and painted my face.

[[ Nails are Models Own 'BlooBoo' ]]

[[ Oh hair, no matter how much I baby you, you're always dry as a bone. ]]

EYES - UDPP, FPE, Fyrinnae 'Digital Faerie', Venomous Cosmetics 'Stiletto Snake', Venomous Cosmetics 'Monster under Your Bed', Sassy Minerals 'Understated', Kryolan liquid eyeliner, mascara, GOSH pencil eyeliner.

FACE - Kryolan ultra foundation as concealer, Collection 2000 'Matt + Minerals', Kryolan translucent powder, Accessorize 'Bermuda' bronzer, Ben Nye blush.

LIPS - Clinique 'Coral Crush' lippy, OCC 'Hush' lip tar.

I decided on wearing a coral lip instead of the usual flat out nude, it is brighter 'in real life' but creamy enough to get away with it. I'm not really a fan of coloured lips paired with coloured eyes, though - maybe I just love MAC 'Honeylove' too much?

FOTD - Wild Berry

Whenever I whip out my Jack Daniels top I feel the sudden urge to back comb my hair, put some power metal on and of course paint on some bold lips...

EYES - A dab of foundation, Yaby white and shell eyeshadows, Illamasqua sealing gel, Kryolan black cake eyeliner, mascara.

FACE - GOSH primer, Kryolan ultra foundation as concealer, Collection 2000 'Matt + Minerals' foundation mixed with Revlon PhotoReady, Rimmel powder, Accessorize 'Bermuda' bronzer, Ben Nye blush.

LIPS - Clinique 'Wild Berry' lipstick.

I'm not sure if 'Wild Berry' is still available or how much it costs...but if you stop by a Clinique counter you should check it out. It's more of a deep purple-red 'in real life',  I think any red lip fan would LOVE this shade - it's quite unique and I've yet to find something close to it. To top it off, the formula and pigmentation is a-ma-zing, so comfortable to wear and long lasting, too - what more could you want?!

What's your favourite red/ berry lip colour?

Dark 'n' Gothic

I'm super, ridiculously, extraordinarily excited for Halloween. Every year I love how skulls, pumpkins, bats and black nail polish don the shelves of practically every store. I wish I had a younger sibling I could take trick-or-treating! I guess this year I'll be embarrassing myself at a house party again, though...

[[ Clinique 'Vintage Red', Barry M black pencil eyeliner ]]

[[ Everyday face + dark lips = easy Halloween party look ]]

The last shoot I was an MUA for, the model wanted lips lined in black fading into red. They're actually very wearable if you have quite full lips, I was nicely surprised! I think I'm gonna rock 'em next time I go to town for cider and black, Slayer and a chicken burger (hey - I never claimed to be classy)...

Clinique 3 Step Skin Care System

Like many-a-blogger/ youtuber, Clinique contacted me a while back to see if I'd like to try their 3 step system. The only 'catch' was that I had to make a few videos on how I was getting along with the products over two weeks - which I'd have done anyway! Now, I'm always on the look out for a way to improve my uneven, oily skin and love how clean and fresh the fool proof 'cleanse, tone, moisturise' method makes me feel - so how could I say no?

A while later I stumbled half awake into my kitchen to see my trial pack for 'Type 3 - Oily/ Combination Skin' had arrived. The kit contains liquid facial soap, clarifying lotion and dramatically different moisturising gel. Bought individually,in their full sizes, this set would set you back a whopping £73. Clinique do, however make smaller sizes (prices start at £13 for products in this specific kit)...

At first, I was a bit wary. The clarifying lotion smelt like strawberry vodka (I kid you not, it smells SO strong) and made my face feel dry and tight. The moisturising gel stank of soggy wheat-a-bix and didn't seem...well...right next to the thicker creams I'm used to. In the spirit of blogging/ out of pure curiosity, I decided to 'man up' and carry on using them for the full two weeks. It could only get better, right?

Well, four days in and I broke out across my chin/ forehead. To make it better, I only spotted (hehe, get it?) the offending red bumps after trecking, in the rain, freezing cold across a muddy field after about three hours sleep in a tent. WHAT A HAPPY CAMPER. Random, big breakouts never happen to me, yeah, the odd spot likes to crash the party - but they never bring their friends. Ho-hum. I figured it was down to my skin adjusting. The majority had cleared up by day 6 (though I'll admit Freederm was probably a great help), so it wasn't a huuuuge problem.

By the end of the first week, my skin had just about gotten used to the products and I was starting to enjoy using them. The clarifying lotion makes your skin feels super fresh, clean and pampered (my fave of the products) and you only need the tiniest amount to get a face full of bubbly goodness. The clarifying lotion was a bit of a fail product for me. Yes, I'm suuuure it's responsible for my now oily free T-zone and it did stop making my skin feel really tight after a while, but that's where the joy stops. According to Clinique, this grain free, water consistency liquid is an exfoliator. SAY WHAT?! Um, Clinique, this stuff is only as exfoliating as what you apply it with, and you suggest, of all things.......cotton wool. Soft, fluffy, passive-aggressive cotton wool. Needless to say, my skin now feels a lot rougher than when I started out with this so-called exfoliating lotion and I'm craving something harsh that will throw me around and call me its bitch. In other words, decent exfoliator. Crappy exfoliation aside - it smells of vodka! Vodka! The last thing I want to smell in the morning. Or at night...Or ever. The moisturising gel had no real noticeable moisturising effects for me, but I only get dry skin on my face during Winter. It does, however, make my skin feel a bit more balanced after the drying effects of the cleansing lotion.
OK. So now that it's all over, my skin is sooooo much more even! Sometimes in the morning I've wondered if I took my make-up off properly the night before, because the redness from my cheeks is almost gone and the slightly darker, yellowy patches have evened out into my true skintone. My skin is a lot less oily, and my foundation doesn't get that oily layer after a few hours wear anymore - awesome! That may be down to swapping foundations recently, though, but I've always used oil free foundations. Sat here, make-up free, my face still feels clean and balanced after....5 hours. Being less oily hasn't prevented any little spots appearing every now and then, but I'm 18 - it's natural.

Overall, my skin really has improved. It's a visible difference. Will I be buying full size when the trial sizes runs out? At £73, no. Smaller sizes can be bought up for a total of £43. If I had that sort of cash to spend on skin care, I might just be tempted...but I'd have to add a proper exfoliator into the mix! Kits are also available for very dry to dry, dry combination, oily combination and very oily skin and are available from the Clinique site and Clinique counters. Introductory sets are currently only £20!

If you want to receive Clinique offers/ promotions/ the chance to get a 3 step system for FREE, either leave your email in the comments OR email me - lily175 [at] hotmail.co.uk for an invite to join the 3thingsbefore30 site using my ambassador code! The Sun is Shining in Bad Habit Land!

Today has been a fabulous day for four very good reasons....

1 - First thing's first, I came down to the most amazing smell this morning. There was a new vanilla candle lit in the hall and it smells like cup cakes with whipped vanilla icing. I think I may have to buy an actual cup cake candle from Etsy....

2 - My Dad found a camping site with three pubs within walking distance. I know, I know, but hush - I like cider and I love my family so combine them and I'm set for a great weekend! Plus, my friend is coming with and apparently bringing his guitar.....I sense some Oasis renditions coming on. I can't wait to see how my Mum copes for two nights in a tent! She wants to bring an actual, full on mattress -_0

3 - Clinique has sent me their 3 step programme to trial for their ambassadors scheme. I'm really excited! No skincare products really have much of an effect on me, usually they just make my skin softer, so it should be interesting to see if Clinique can step up and make me praise them....

4 - Benefit contacted me to attend one of their 'auditions', which is basically a trial run on their counter and a bit of training about 'traffic stopping'. I hate that phrase. THEY'RE PEOPLE, NOT TRAFFIC - treat them as such!

What should I wear my make-up like for the Benefit audition? I actually only own 3 Benefit products - High Beam (which I'm not a fan of), an old gold eye pencil and 'Pistachio' eyeshadow, which I think was discontinued years ago! I have been craving the Confessions of a Concealaholic kit after trying Bo-ing a while back, but these days I'd rather £30 go on a night out instead!

Hmm...Maybe something bronzey and glowy? Then again, I think my shaven head stops me from carrying off the bronze goddess look very well....heck, those smokey browns are calling me again!

What are your thoughts on 'traffic stopping' (when sales assistants stop you to make you look at their brand/ products)? Do you hate it? Have you ever done it?

Strip your lips

I love a good nude. Nude lip, that is! I've even been known to rock the blanked out, foundation lips from time to time (only EVER with super heavy eyes) and I feel no shame! I feel incomplete with a lip colour and nudes are always a winner.

A nude lip goes with EVERYTHING, so it's worth investing in a few nudey colours. As a 'rule', I'd say a pink-nude, tan-nude and a neutral nude. Pinks generally work well with cool eyes/ cheeks, tan works with warmer colours and a neutral 'Your lips but better' works with, well, everything! Trust me, you'll be reaching for these practically every day, so it's worth spending a few extra pennies on some really good quality ones...

L-R - MUA Shade 11, Clinique 'Nude Splurge', MAC 'Jubilee', MAC 'Honeylove', MAC 'Blankety', Barry M 101.

On the one end of the spectrum are the 'My lips but better' colours - Shade 11 practically matches my own natural lip colour, whereas 101 at the other end is super pale and very pink, not so natural at all! I generally use this to pale out the other colours. My fave in this bunch HAS to be MAC 'Jubilee', however, that and 'Blankety' both got destroyed by my sister -_- Destruction aside, they're both fantastic nudes. MAC has a huge range of nude colours, so bob in and have a play!

L-R - Natural Collection lip balm tube, Colour Works toffee, MAC 'Instant Gold' lustreglass, Fyrinnae 'Lace Gloves' lip lustre.

I'm not really a gloss girl, as you can probably tell, these have randomly appeared in my lip collection over time instead of being concious 'nude lip decisions'. The Natural Collection is actually a lip balm, but it's so thick and pigmented that it can be used as a gloss! I'm not even sure they sell these any more. Either way, my fave has to be 'Lace Gloves', the texture is perfect and it rubs down to a beautiful pink-peach-gold.

What do you think about nude lips? Are you a 'My lips but better' kinda person, or a blanked out lip kinda person? What's your favourite nude colour? Feed my nude lips addiction!

Superdrug MUA Lipstick Comparisons

Shade 2 ('Haze'? 'Berry Pop'?) is similar to MAC 'Hot Gossip', but has a stronger plum tone and more pigmentation. Both shades have the exact same purple-pink shimmer (serious dupe alert). Shade 2 is less drying on the lips than Hot Gossip.

Save yourself...£9 (I think) and go with MUA instead.

Shade 3 ('Shout'? 'Pick Me!'?) is veeery similar to Barry M '142 Raspberry'. 142 has stronger pigmentation and leaves a stain to the lips, it also lasts longer than Shade 3. Shade 3, however has a much nicer texture (Barry M matte lipsticks have a very solid, firm texture) and isn't as drying....

Hmm. Tough call. Longevity or comfort? Comfort. I'd choose Shade 3.

Shade 11 ('Perfect 10'? 'Cream Peach'?) is quite similar to MAC 'Jubilee' and 'Honeylove', but has a stronger peach tone. Fairly similar to Clinique 'Nude Splurge' but, well 'Nude Splurge' is more...nude.

I'd honestly opt for any of these, but MAC 'Jubilee' has been a long time personal favourite of mine and I'll be re-buying it anyway once it runs out!

Shade 13 ('Miss '55'? 'Madam'?) is a very bright pink-red, perfect for pin-up style looks. It's brighter than Clinique 'Vintage Red', pinkier and brighter than Clinique 'Wild Berry'. I think MAC 'Lady Danger' is a truer red than Shade 13.

This shade reduced my Dita Von Tease clone friend to yell, 'YOU'RE SO GOOD, HOW ARE YOU SO CHEAP?!' at it in the middle of Superdrug...

That's my thought on all of these! You need to try them out!
